The section on clutch adjustment in the repair manual is confusing so here is he way I do it
Slack off the adjuster at the lever
Remove the clutch mechanism cover
Slack off the locknut and turn the adjusting screw clockwise till you feel resisitance, do not overtighten the screw, turn the screw one quarter turn counter clockwise and tighten the locknut. Adjust the cable at the lever until you feel a little resistance when you pull the lever in, tighten the locknut.
On my first Madass I had a problem where I could not get enough adjustment at the lever because the cable had stretched a little, even though the cable was still in very good condition. So I made a spacer out of #12 copper wire. It did the trick and was cheaper than a new cable.
